The Army’s 2021 budget request trims the troubled Next Generation Combat Vehicle program 11 percent while raising spending on its other modernization priorities – more than doubling investments in new high-tech infantry kit.
All told, the Army's investing $57 billion in modernization over five years -- but it wants to take time to test new technologies before it commits to them.
WASHINGTON: At least a dozen major Army weapons programs face big decisions in 2019. The service will launch a competition for new armored vehicles; award development contracts for scout aircraft and helicopter engines; conduct key tests of long-range missiles, anti-aircraft defenses, rifles, targeting goggles, and multiple battlefield networks; and field new electronics for command posts.
The Army is just weeks away from awarding contracts to begin buying prototypes of new infantry weapons, with live-fire tests next year.
The catch, of course, is that the Army's tried to field all these things before -- and failed. Why would things go any better this time around? Brig. Gen. Christopher Donahue has an answer for that.
